Maurice White embraced the importance of blending great individual talent into a unique and collective body of artistry that ultimately blessed us with one of the most legendary bands in modern music history. With that thought in mind, one of the stated goals of The Vision of Maurice White, is to highlight the role of the men and women who are a part of Maurice’s musical umbrella; past, present and future.
So today, we highlight Tom Saviano, a highly regarded musician in the music industry whose recording credits extends to producer, composer, musical director, arranger, saxophonist, keyboard player, and more. Tom’s unique musical gifts has afforded him the opportunity to also compose for film and television, and to establish himself as a recording artist as well.
In 1981, Tom performed on “You Are A Winner” and the Grammy Award record “I Wanna Be With You” from Earth, Wind and Fire’s album Raise, as well as Maurice White’s 1985 self titled solo album “Maurice White.” However, Tom’s career began as one of Los Angeles’ most talented session players, a reputation that landed him a stint as Melissa Manchester’s musical director.
It was during this period with Melissa that #TS formed the group HEAT with whom he released two critically acclaimed albums (HEAT and Still Waiting) from MCA Records, generating two Top 40 R&B hits, “Just Like You” and “This Love That We Found.” On both albums, Saviano co-produced and arranged all of the music, played sax and keyboard and wrote and/or co-wrote all of the songs.
Much like Maurice White, Tom assembled a group of outstanding musicians to create an incredible jazz infused R&B/Pop sound inspired by an Earth, Wind and Fire feel, and the result was an debut album that “Billboard, Cashbox and other trade magazines recognized as a force that came blazing into the atmosphere with a sophisticated presence usually expected from veterans such as Quincy Jones or a team like Maurice White & Charles Stepney.” –(Scott Gross, Inside MusiCast)
The albums from “HEAT” featured multiple EWF associates such as Jerry Hey, Chuck Findley, David Foster, Ricky Lawson, Paul Jackson Jr, and others.
In 2013, Tom took a fresh look at the music HEAT created and earnestly produced a re-introduction of the music with the benefit of new technology, while maintaining the essence of the original songs. Please take this opportunity to check out “HEAT Revisted.”
Side Note: “Just Like You” was also hand picked by Debbie Allen and used for her dance feature on an episode of the FAME television series as well as being covered on the “Kids From Fame” soundtrack.
Sid Simpson wrote the song as his tribute to Earth, Wind & Fire, and found the right producer in Tom Saviano who won a Grammy on saxophone with the Jerry Hey horn section on EWF’s song “I Wanna Be With You” from the album “Raise.”
With the single released on June 1, Jevon forwarded a link to his uncle, Earth, Wind & Fire’s Philip Bailey for him to listen to the song, and Philip’s response was “Mind Blowin”
What a way to begin your weekend. Jevon is very appreciative of Philip’s kind words, and shared with me – “My uncles response means everything to me!! He is the reason I started to sing, and he is the reason that I still believe in myself to continue!”
Well done Jevon, Tom Saviano, Sid Simpson, Michael O’Neill, and John Zaika on the song which can be found on all streaming platforms & for purchase on iTunes.
After relocating to Los Angeles, Maurice White signed with Jim Brown’s management company BBC.
That association with BBC (Jim Brown, Paul Bloch, and Richard Covey) eventually led to an audition for EWF at Jim Brown’s home for RCA and Warner Bros.
Joe Smith, executive Vice President of Warner Bros, saw enough of the group that evening to offer EWF a recording deal that was in place and signed by Maurice White within a month of the audition.
“After we completed our debut album, we began touring whenever we could play and whoever would have us. We did several gigs at the legendary Maverick Flats on Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles.”

Around the time of the release of Earth, Wind & Fire’s album “Millennium,” there was a well thought out television special to coincide with the release of the album. Below is a thought from Maurice White in his own words to consider from the interview.
Maurice White:
“In a sense of the group Earth, Wind & Fire, it was a thought that I had for the future -I created it in the future, and now it’s the present. As you move on in music, and move on in life, it’s evolution.”
This is what you call having a huge vision, and not limiting your music and Earth, Wind & Fire to nostalgia, and yesteryear. Forever grateful for Maurice’s vision, and that EWF is still significantly relevant, and getting it done. My sincere appreciation to Philip Bailey, Verdine White, Ralph Johnson, and EWF’s band and horn section.
Earth, Wind & Fire’s outstanding album “Faces,” was released on October 14, 1980. An outstanding 41 year tour around the world for this gem produced by Maurice White for Kalimba Productions.

“Let’s Groove” became a huge multi format worldwide smash. Later, we would have others songs do okay for us, but nothing like “Let’s Groove.” It has only grown in popularity as the years have gone by. “Let’s Groove gave EW&F the wheels to cross yet another bridge. “Shining Star” was the bridge into another world; “After The Love is Gone” was a bridge into another, but to a generation of younger people born in the mid-1970’s, “Let’s Groove” would be our signature song.”
I would also add “September.” Maurice White: “September” was ARC’s first release, and an across-the-board smash and it continues to be one of EW&F’s most memorable songs.
